The Early Show on CBS did a great segment on cosmetic dental procedures recently. It is very interesting–click here to watch the piece.
Cosmetic Dentistry of Colorado is now on Facebook!! We would love if you became a fan of our office.
On Thanksgiving Day, Dan Caplis, a friend of the practice, saved another man’s life by his prompt use of an AED. The man collapsed from a heart attack during a game of flag football. The outcome could have been very different if Caplis had not used the AED quickly. To read the full story, click here: http://www.villagerpublishing.com/index.htm
AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator; it is used during CPR protocol. AEDs are very simple to use and dramatically increase the chances of survival if used within the first 10 minutes. According to Caplis, “these machines are so easy that people shouldn’t be afraid of them. They walk you through every step. There’s virtually no way to mess it up.”
AEDs are present in many public places such as airports, shopping centers, and City and County buildings. Individuals may also purchase units, as Caplis did, to keep in their car or home. For more information on AEDs visit http://www.redcross.org .

Previously, adult patients with healthy, yet crooked teeth have only had two options for correcting their cosmetic concerns: traditional orthodontic treatment or porcelain veneers. Most prefer not to have braces for two or more years or dislike the appearance of metal brackets, and many of these patients are not good candidates for veneers because of the misalignment of their teeth. This can be a very challenging and frustrating problem to overcome. However, with short-term orthodontic treatment we can provide a conservative, inexpensive, and highly effective solution for our patients.
Short-term orthodontics utilizes clear brackets and tooth colored wires, eliminating the unsightly appearance of most braces, and treatment is usually completed within 6-8 months. The focus of this treatment is only on the teeth that show when patients speak or smile, not changing the bite relationship. This approach has been used successfully for several years and the results are amazing.
Dr. Radz and his team have completed the Six Month Smiles short-term orthodontic course. For more information, go to www.6monthsmiles.com.

Last week our patient Renee Herlocker won the 2009 Spike TV Host award. It was great to see her on national TV! We are all very proud of her.
Wish we could take some credit for it, as we did do some minor cosmetic dentistry with a couple of no prep veneers to enhance her smile! However, the reality is she won it all on her own.
Interestingly enough, I found the other day that 5280 had picked up on Renee’s accomplishment and added it to their blog.
Last weekend my assistants and I attended Dr. Ryan Swain’s 6 Month Smiles course.
We left with a ton of great information and training. Dr. Swain’s concepts of using short term orthodontics to help noninvasively improve a patients smile are very interesting.
I believe this is a great alternative to Invisalign treatment with the potential to not only minimize the time a patient is in braces, but also to be able to achieve more ideal results than Invisalign or other removable orthodontic therapies can provide.
We are very excited about the potential of this technique, especially when combining it with a “no-prep” veneer treatment. We envision the ability to create some dramatic cosmetic changes without the need to prepare teeth!
Dentists looking for more information on Dr. Swain’s course can visit the website for 6 month smiles

I spent the last week of April at the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s annual scientific convention. I believe this was my 14th meeting in a row. As always, it was a great week of learning and catching up with old friends.
I was also very busy this week as I had 3 presentations during the course of the meeting. The Academy asked me to give a presentation on Elective, Cosmetic Dentistry for Young Adults and Adolescents. This is one of my favorite presentations. As so many young people now want to maximize the appearance of their smiles I believe it is important to do so in a conservative manner. Additionally, I did a workshop to help other dentists learn the many different ways to prepare teeth for porcelain veneers. Lastly, I had a presented a program discussing a new composite (tooth-colored filling material) that has some unique properties and interesting potential. Interestingly enough this material is produced by a Colorado company, Septodont!
Then, when I wasn’t learning or teaching I sat in some review courses to prepare me for my upcoming pursuit of obtaining my Accreditation in the AACD. So looks like I’ll be taking even more photographs in the office over the next few years!
The AACD meeting is always a great learning and sharing experience from me and a wonderful place for any dentist to learn what is on the cutting edge of cosmetic dentistry. For patients it is a great information resource. Patients can go to www.aacd.com and find many answers to their questions regarding cosmetic dentistry.

I just received in the mail today the April issue of Oral Health…and two of our veneer patients are on the cover.
A year ago we did porcelain veneers on Annette and Renee. Our results were so nice that I submitted an article and a photo to this dental journal. I was really excited when the editor called in the fall and accepted the article and the photos.
Both of the patients were treated with Venus veneers. This porcelain allows for us to place veneers on teeth without removing any of the natural tooth. It is a similar process to Lumineers , just using a different porcelain and a different lab.
Next time you are in the office you will see the cover of the journal on our wall as well as a copy of the journal.
